The Edit: Expressing Gratitude

W
hile we might not remember it as we walk through the aisles of our local pharmacy or roam the floors of our favorite department store, there is a holiday between Halloween and Christmas/Hannukah that many in the United States celebrate in late November—Thanksgiving. While there is no question that the origins of the holiday leave much to be desired, in practice, Thanksgiving gives us an opportunity to spend time with friends and family, eat as much food as we can handle, and take stock of the things for which we feel grateful. Without the commercial elements attributed to some other holidays, Thanksgiving can be whittled down to simply feeling grateful.

Though the etymological roots of “thankful” and “gratitude” are the same (the Latin word gratus meaning pleasing or thankful), gratitude conveys an attitude beyond the emotions of thankfulness; it involves expressing a feeling of thankfulness and an appreciation for the people and things we often take for granted. As jewelry lovers (to put it mildly), we can think of no better way of expressing our gratitude than through jewelry. Whether with overt messaging, lockets that keep our loved ones close to our hearts, wearing our heart on our sleeves (or décolletage or wrists, as it were), birthstones and zodiacs that remind us of our favorite people, or symbols that are representative of meaningful moments shared with one’s beloveds, jewelry is a powerful tool that helps us live in a spirit of gratitude all day every day. And isn’t that the goal, really?

We are putting together a Holiday Gift Guide that we’ll be releasing later this month, but in the spirit of Thanksgiving, we wanted to do a brief wrap up of some of our favorite ways of expressing our gratitude with jewelry.

Loquet London:

Touted as “fine jewelry that holds your story,” Loquet London means that quite literally. Their clear, sapphire cases, framed in 18k gold and sometimes encrusted with diamonds, open up to allow collectors to personalize their pieces with a seemingly infinite number of charms. Birds, bees, bugs, birthstones, words of affirmation and symbols of faith are just a few of the options that they offer. With an interactive site that lets you build your dream piece, this collection was made for reminding us of the things that really matter in life

Monica Rich Kosann

Though somewhat traditional, there is nothing staid about the lockets created by Monica Rich Kosann! Originally a portrait photographer, Monica was drawn to jewelry’s ability to inspire and empower. (You can learn more about her philosophy in the podcast we recorded with Monica last December.) Her brand has evolved tremendously over the years and now includes tennis bracelets, charms, earrings and link chains, but we think her classic lockets and “Poesy” bracelets with inspirational messages are the perfect way to showcase gratitude.

Buddha Mama:

Helmed by mother/daughter duo, Nancy and Dakota Badia, Buddha Mama has enshrined an attitude of gratitude since its inception. The brand’s origins date back to when Nancy sat at her kitchen table to bead bracelets in an effort to raise money for her Buddhist center. While their collections have become increasingly sophisticated throughout the brand’s evolution, that spirit of giving back has remained one of their core tenets. Replete with references to Buddhism and Eastern traditions, their pieces embody a cool, rock n’ roll vibe. Their hearts and lockets are a fresh, vibrant way of showcasing love and serve as a constant reminder to the wearer to live every day in gratitude.

Marie Litchtenberg:

The foundation of inspiration for designer Marie Litechtenberg‘s collection was a chain she was given by her mother when she was a teenager. This kindness resonated with Marie throughout her life and eventually led her to think about what to pass down to her own daughter. Throughout her ever-expanding collections, Marie injects a sense of joy and gratitude. Minute details, like the hand-woven prayer links blessed in the temples of Jaipur, and the whimsical yet sentimental messages in her hand-engraved, enamel and gold barrel pendants, make Marie’s work a perfect option for anyone wanting to showcase their gratitude while still embodying a sense of levity.

Heather B. Moore:

Heather B. Moore is not just a queen of personalized jewelry, she is a captain of the genre, inviting collectors of her work to “Cherish who you are.” Her in-house steel shop, located in Heather’s native Cleveland, Ohio, manufactures tooling that can replicate an individual’s personal handwriting or sketch, and then uses a freehand technique to stamp each letter, number or symbol by hand. The process and the tools she employs are literally the same as those with which they stamped airplanes with identifying marks during the war. “When you stamp something, you compress the molecules of the metal,” Heather explains. This means the message or symbol becomes innately part of the metal, and isn’t that the perfect choice for someone who wants to convey the permanence of the gratitude one feels?

Zoe Chicco:

From a young age, designer Zoe Chicco‘s mom told her to “work hard, stay humble, be kind.” This became a mantra for Zoe throughout her life and is a philosophy she applies to everything she does in business. Her infinitely wearable pieces are made to be stacked and layered, and her prolific, contemporary collections include designs that are intended to inspire, empower and convey love and gratitude. With messages like “You can and you will,” “Trust the path” and “Do what you love,” Zoe’s work can serve as a gentle reminder to be kind to ourselves and invite the one’s you love to see themselves through your eyes.

Jacquie Aiche:

“There’s something ethereal in the way that jewelry can make women feel…it’s like magic,” designer Jacquie Aiche explains. With a vast knowledge of the mystical and healing properties of minerals and gemstones, Jacquie leverages these powers to provide inner healing and happiness to collectors of her work. Her sensual pieces encourage wearers to express themselves and celebrate their individuality through adornment, and her “Mama” pieces are a poignant yet modern acknowledgement of that all-important model for gratitude, our moms.

Anzie:

The origins of Montreal-based brand, Anzie, are rooted in a spirit of celebration of life and color. Its namesake and founder, Anzie Stein, is an artist who, upon learning of her husband’s diagnosis, created a line of jewelry to help raise funds for colorectal cancer awareness. Now joined by her daughters, Jaclyn and Joanna, the brand continues to celebrate life and its most significant moments while following the guiding principals of family, community, philanthropy and artistic integrity. Whether opting for a chic showcase of one’s birthstone or choosing to embrace one’s astrological sign, the brand offers ample means for finding one’s center, and isn’t that needed in order to be the best version of ourselves?!
