s third generation jewelers, the twin sisters behind Gemella Jewels, Anna and Rachel Aschendorf, have been influenced by spectacular jewelry from a young age. Their grandfather, Fred, was a holocaust survivor who got his start in the industry as a messenger for a stone dealer. Their grandmother, Stella, also a holocaust survivor, joined her husband in his pursuit to rebuild his life and the two started a veritable empire selling jewelry across the globe. The couple traveled to places as far afield as Iran, Brunei, Colombia and Japan, selling to Shahs, Princesses and business tycoons, before eventually settling in Pforzheim, Germany, a town famous for jewelry manufacturing.
In addition to the name, which means “twins” in Italian, the sisters pay homage to their special relationship throughout their extensive collections.

While exemplifying the commonly held belief that twins share a secret language, each of the women brings a different perspective and skillset to their relatively young brand. Anna possesses a natural eye for selecting beautiful diamonds and gemstones, and she honed this inherent acumen with a Graduate Diamond degree from GIA, as well as a certification from the Diamond District in Tel Aviv, before beginning her career as a Bridal and Fine Jewelry Consultant in New York City, teaching diamond education and creating custom designs.

Rachel has also had a passion for jewelry from a young age and she embarked on a career in the industry from her very first internship at a jewelry company. She went on to work in variety of specialized areas, including a jewelry store, a diamond wholesale company and a private jeweler. With a diamond certification from the Diamond District in Tel Aviv, she combines her passion with a strong foundation of knowledge in the development of beautiful and timeless pieces.

Today, the original company that was started by the twins’ grandparents in the 1950’s is run by their mom and aunt out of New York City. The sisters continue to benefit from some key relationships that were established by their grandparents, ensuring that the same excellence in craftsmanship and material exists in Gemella’s work. In addition to the name, which means “twins” in Italian, the sisters pay homage to their special relationship throughout their extensive collections.

Their signature Sweetheart collection showcases the “same same, but different” label people often attribute to twins, with two distinct stones coming together as one unique design. Harmonious symmetry is a key component throughout their body of work, and each of their pieces embodies a sense of permanence resulting from impeccable construction, exquisite selection of diamonds and gemstones, and an unwavering dedication to timeless design.
