une 1 marks the start of LGBTQ+ Pride month, which is a celebration of the beauty and diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. Pride was first observed in late June of 1970 on the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, which started in the early hours of June 28, 1969, after police raided the Stonewall Inn Bar in Greenwich Village in New York City. In 1999 and 2000, then president Bill Clinton declared June “Gay & Lesbian Pride Month,” followed by President Barack Obama declaring June LGBT Pride Month during each year of his administration and in 2021, President Joe Biden declared June LGBTQ+ Pride Month.
Whatever you call it, the month of June is a celebration for and by members of the LGBTQ+ community and the people who love and support them.
