Brand Spotlight: Aisha Baker

F
ormed in 2017, Aisha Baker jewelry is a representation of the creative synergy of the brand’s namesake, art and fashion expert, Aisha Baker, and the singular talent of designer Hoonik Chang. Together, the duo has created an indelibly distinct aesthetic and established a visual lexicon that creates a narrative of magic, whimsy and fantasy that they weave throughout their prolific collections.

Their collective vision has resulted in mesmerizingly dimensional pieces that are both sophisticated and enchanting.

Aisha, an entrepreneur who hails from Dubai, has an impeccable eye for design and had long been wanting to create a transcendental collection of high jewelry that elevated universal themes of fairytales learned in childhood. When she met South Korean-born, London-trained Hoonik, that fantasy quickly became a reality. Hoonik had graduated at the top of his class at Central S. Martins and had further honed his creative acumen through apprenticeships at established maisons. Their collective vision has resulted in mesmerizingly dimensional pieces that are both sophisticated and enchanting.

The architecture of their work mirrors the complexities in their motifs and showcases an astonishing blend of technical acumen and inventiveness. In addition to their more accessible, commercial collections, the brand also offers several limited addition pieces. Their Alcazar ring, which took a year to make, is constructed of cubes of enamel, gemstone and 18k gold clusters in multi-faceted layers. The Mystère ring contains a hidden gemstone that can only be seen through a small window of enamel, while the Majesty collection features citrines set to create the illusion that they are floating in mid-air.

Rooted in concepts both ethereal and earthly, there is at the heart of each of their collections a sense of wonder and optimism. Their Forever Young collection embraces the insouciance of childhood and was designed through that lens, featuring themes of nature, candy and toys with pieces titled Bubble Gum, Sugar Crush and Music Box. Indications of Aisha and Hoonik’s multi-cultural backgrounds are also visible in the incorporation of symbols that promote luck and longevity in Korean lore, as well as ancient totems of happiness, and influences of Asian ceramic art and pottery.
