Brand Spotlight: Coomi

F
or the designer of Coomi, Coomi Bhasin, jewelry is not simply a form of adornment or a status symbol, it is an integral part of the human experience. Born in Bombay, Coomi adheres to the historic and cultural traditions that tie gold deeply to spirituality. This fusion of the material and the sacred is inseparable for Coomi, and it is from her belief in the transcendental powers of precious metals and gemstones that she draws inspiration for her designs.

Coomi is an impassioned collector of rare and interesting antiquities, traveling the world to find these elusive objects and taking deep dives into their history and provenance.

Coomi’s professional career spans a wide range of pursuits, yet in each, there is a commonality in her approach to her creative process. Whether working as a textile designer, architect, landscape designer or, since she launched her eponymous brand in 2002, fine jewelry designer, she applies a keen ability to interpret the world around her into a unique, visual lexicon.

An astute observer of both physical and energetic phenomena, she can find beauty in nuances and details that are often overlooked or disregarded by others.

Coomi is an impassioned collector of rare and interesting antiquities, traveling the world to find these elusive objects and taking deep dives into their history and provenance. Understanding the back stories of arrowheads, Roman artifacts, ancient Egyptian statues and ancient coins allows her to give collectors of her work a piece of history beyond tangible form.

Entering into a dialogue with the materials with which she works, Coomi lets the gemstones and artifacts tell her what they want to become, adding parts of her soul into the design of each one-of-a-kind creation.

Each piece in Coomi’s prolific collection is replete with rich symbolism. From diamonds and etchings that sit next to the skin to references to Lord Shiva and his third eye to visual references to the Basílica de la Sagrada Família in Barcelona, themes of religion, history, travel, art and culture are given imaginative expression in her work.

Working in 20k gold is itself a signifier of her cultural beliefs and identity, and her view of the noble metal as an essential part of the human form results in voluminous pieces designed to move gracefully with the body, to create music with each flick of the wrist or nod of the head.
