Brand Spotlight: Frederique Constant

They say the devil is in the details, and at Frederique Constant, that motto is absolutely true. This young brand, now owned by the Citizen Group, has built a robust and loyal following thanks to passion, quality, value, and incredible details.

Just a year shy of celebrating 30 years since launching its first watch collection, Swiss watch brand Frederique Constant is a true force in the watchmaking world. Founded on a philosophy to offer top quality, high complications, and elegant aesthetics for great value, this brand has quietly been building its own legend.

From sublimely simple three-handed watches to complicated perpetual calendars, chronographs, and tourbillon timepieces, Frederique Constant has become a fully integrated and highly successful manufacture.

The Beginning

Initially founded in 1988 by husband and wife team Peter Stas and Aletta Stas-Bax, Frederique Constant introduced its first collection in 1992 and has consistently offered high-quality watches in the affordable segment.

From sublimely simple three-handed watches to complicated perpetual calendars, chronographs, and tourbillon timepieces, Frederique Constant has become a fully integrated and highly successful manufacture.

Groundbreaking Vision

While its first timepieces were mechanical wonders, the brand also creates quartz watches and hybrid movements that power horological smartwatches.

In fact, in 2015, Frederique Constant was one of the first Swiss brands to offer a combination caliber. Dubbed the Horological Smartwatch by the brand, this groundbreaking model brought both traditional watchmaking and high-tech connected watches to the forefront.

Moreover, Frederique Constant is a pioneer in its use of silicium technology – first employing it back in 2008 – and has even released its own silicon monolithic oscillating weight that reduces the friction, wear, and tear on the watch movement.

An In-House Manufacture

Becoming a fully integrated manufacture – one that makes its own movements, components, and finished watches – is no easy feat. It requires incredible technical prowess, state-of-the-art CNC (computer numerical control) machining, other machinery to cut pieces within a fraction of a hair’s breadth for precision, and more. But this determined couple made it happen. And today, Frederique Constant is under the vigilant eye of the Citizen Group, which purchased the controlling interest in the brand several years ago.

Fan Favorites

Frederique Constant boasts nearly 30 different in-house calibers to power its various collections and has become a benchmark for high-quality pieces at attainable prices. By paying exacting attention to details at every step of the way and pouring passion and expertise into the mix, Frederique Constant is fast becoming a household name.

Among the brand’s most coveted collections are the complex Slimline calendars, the sporty-chic Runabout chronographs, the full line of Classic watches, and the coveted open-worked Heart Beat series with a dial aperture for viewing a portion of the movement – all crafted from fine materials, noble metals, and a smattering of diamonds.

New Releases

This year, Frederique Constant remains true to its classic aesthetic with the stainless steel Slimline Monolithic Manufacture watch powered by an automatic in-house movement with an incredible 80 hours of power reserve and a Heart Beat-style aperture. With striking blue guilloche dial and date indication, this watch is a modern interpretation of a classic look.

The brand also updated its Highlife Heart Beat series to include a slimmer movement, an integrated bracelet, and a stylized globe motif on the dial. Frederique Constant even added its own easy-change interchangeable strap system, which is like icing on the proverbial cake.

Oh, and if you care about your children’s educations, you should know that Frederique Constant cares, too. On the philanthropic side, the brand is a great supporter of education and regularly works with Donors Choose.
