Brand Spotlight: L’Atelier Nawbar

T
he ways in which Creative Directors, Dima and Tania Nawbar, pay homage to their family’s legacy, and their place in its dynasty, are myriad. Founded in 1891 in Beirut, Lebanon, L’Atalier Nawbar is rooted in creating expressions of love, beauty, heritage and spirit through the mediums of precious metals and gemstones. The duo continues this tradition in pieces that are modern and sophisticated, while also imbued with sentiments.

Originating with their great, great grandfather, Kahlil Nawbar, L’Atelier Nawbar was first founded in Beirut’s gold souk.

Originating with their great, great grandfather, Kahlil Nawbar, L’Atelier Nawbar was first founded in Beirut’s gold souk. Kahlil was followed in business by his son, Rizkallah, and later by Dima and Tania’s father Ellie, as well as their uncle. Representing the fourth generation of the brand, Dima and Tania grew up surrounded by the wonders of jewelry in the family’s workshop, and their father encouraged their interest, bringing his daughters on his business trips where he’d buy gemstones and seek out fresh talent.

The memories that linger from these formative years fuel their creative process and vestiges of their experiences can be seen throughout their collections. The glamour of attending auctions at Sotheby’s, Phillips and Bonhams is evident in their many red carpet-worthy pieces, and nods to the 1990’s, when they would often see their mother, Fadia, dressed up to attend galas, are a common theme throughout their prolific collections.

Under their direction, Dima and Tania’s family ties are continually reinforced, with collection names paying tribute to their history, and putting their parents front and center in their marketing and social media campaigns.

Recognizing the multitude of ways in which contemporary women operate in the world, they create unique silhouettes in a variety of sizes and a mix of metals, gemstones and colorful enamel. Within their showroom, which is situated on one of Beirut’s quaint, cobblestoned streets, as well as on their social media channels, they offer styling tips for today’s hottest trends such as layering, stacking and mixing metals, while also urging collectors of their work to express their individual style through their choice of adornment.

While their cutting edge designs have broad appeal and have garnered a following among megawatt celebrities and the every-day well-heeled alike, the duo is also keenly aware of the inherent meaning and gravitas of fine jewelry. The inspirations behind their designs are both subtle and overt, with enamel mimicking a day of play at the beach, talismans and amulets serving as sources of spirituality and protection and dreams rendered into colorful, mystical flowers; their work is both intensely personal and universally relatable.

All of L’Atelier Nawbar’s designs are fully conceived and executed in their Beirut-based salon. They partner with master craftspeople who have honed their skills under the tutelage of the generations that preceded them, and who honor the traditions of the past while also remaining open to the benefits of state-of-the-art technology.
