rowing up within the jewelry trade allowed Mattia Cielo to develop a deep appreciation for the tradition and artistry of jewelry design from a young age. His hometown, Vicenza, Italy, is revered as the world capital of goldsmithing, and when he entered the family business after a brief career in finance, he had long appreciated the role that adornment has played throughout human history. “People buy fashion to represent themself for a season, to show up,” Mattia stated during a COUTURE podcast recorded in April of 2020, “When they buy jewelry, they buy it as a generational purchase because they want to use it to represent themself in the long term. In the ancient tribes, they were using teeth of sharks, of lions, to give a message inside the community…always humankind will need a message of unity somehow.”
His pieces are a testament to Mattia’s belief that luxury can be elegant and sophisticated, and also functional and comfortable.
It is this steadfast belief in jewelry’s ability to not only represent one’s place in history, but to impact humanity, that fuels his desire to disrupt conventional beliefs. For Mattia, who considers himself a “jeweler of the Third Millennium,” heritage is not simply a replica of the past, rather, it is honoring the skills and knowledge that have been passed down through generations by expanding upon them and carving out a new future. Mattia believes in the transcendental effects of jewelry, and he doesn’t want collectors to feel restrained by his designs, he wants for them to move with the human form, and for his work to revolutionize the way people experience jewelry.
This deeply seeded philosophy is reflected in Mattia’s creative approach. In bringing his vision to life, he works with artist-designer Massimiliano “Max” Bonoli, described as the “architect” of the jewels, who combines techniques from industrial design and jewelry making to push the boundaries of possibilities. Just as Vicenza benefited from the development of machines designed for textiles to enhance their world-renown jewelry production, Mattia’s eponymous brand capitalizes on their proximity in Northeast Italy to a “cradle of micro-mechanics and robotics,” as well as the region’s inherent know-how in aerospace and luxury automotive industry, to discover the means with which metal can realize its full potential.
Through the use of innovative materials and techniques, and often incorporating advanced engineering and technology, Mattia Cielo creates jewelry that is flexible, lightweight and adaptable, as soft and luxurious as cashmere. The brand’s methods not only enhance the comfort of the jewelry, but also allow for greater creative expression and artistic freedom; his pieces are a testament to Mattia’s belief that luxury can be elegant and sophisticated, and also functional and comfortable.
Mattia Cielo’s signature Rugiada collection displays the brand’s ingenuity in a variety of scales and silhouettes. The Rugiada Diamanti pieces feature diamonds of varying levels, with the metal wrapping gracefully around wrists and necks, and classic hoop earrings dangling light as air in a range of sizes. Rugiada Pietre introduces colorful gemstones to the collection, creating a diverse palette for self-expression, and diamond pave pieces provide a contemporary interpretation of diamond essentials like tennis bracelets, necklaces and mile long diamond line earrings. Their use of yellow, rose, white and striking black gold results in distinct style statements that reflect a mood or a moment.
