ounder of MÌREL Fine Jewelry, Mìrel Baysal, was born in the United States and is of Turkish descent. Her worldview is infused with the duality of Turkey’s ancient, cultural roots and the lived reality of a contemporary world. During childhood summer days spent wandering the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Mìrel eschewed trinkets and souvenirs in favor of treasures; goldsmiths’ benches, precious metals, ancient craftsmanship and antique designs all evoking a sense of quiet permanence that resonated with her from an impressionable age. The enduring reverence that was born in those thriving shops and streets is an ongoing source of inspiration for Mìrel as she seeks to create collections that transcend mere adornment.

While studying Government and Economics at Harvard, Mìrel discovered that it was her Art History classes, their study of Byzantine mosaics and ancient civilizations, that truly captivated her imagination. Her early professional path allowed her to gain experience in a range of disciplines and environments, from luxury fashion to Wall Street, and gave her an intuitive understanding of a diversity of lifestyles.

“For me, jewelry is not just adornment—it is history in wearable form,” Mìrel explains. “I believe in designing pieces that feel like they have always existed, yet are deeply personal to the wearer. My goal is to create modern heirlooms—pieces that are meant to be lived in, loved, and passed down.”

Throughout the development of her collections, Mìrel demonstrates her commitment to safeguarding the longevity of centuries-old craftsmanship. Her themes and motifs are conjured up from memories and moments of her past, the incantational effect of gazing upon celestial lights, and her admiration of micro mosaics and intricate stone setting techniques.

Her thoughts, intentions and emotions first take shape in sketches of her designs before being entrusted to master craftspeople in Turkey who employ ancient techniques passed down for generations in bringing her vision to life. By incorporating these specialized mediums as central elements of her designs, she ensures the craft will persist while also reinterpreting the concepts in unique ways that appeal to a modern style sensibility.

The brand’s debut collection is entitled Anno Domini, which is Latin for “in the year of our Lord” and is more commonly recognized as “A.D.” or year one. The name pays homage to origins, and speaks to both a collective history and personal beginnings, marking not only the reference point of a civilization, but also the first chapter of the brand itself.

Working in responsibly sourced 18k gold, each diamond and gemstone incorporated into her designs has been hand-selected for their ability to reflect light and emotion. Blue diamonds are a signature of the brand, with one of these scintillating gems incorporated into each piece that bears the MÌREL name.

Mìrel’s philosophical approach to her craft is reflective in her belief that jewelry should be transformative, that it should carry meaning, and that it has the ability to be a touchpoint in the narratives of the lives of its wearers, saying, “I design in the space where history becomes personal—where tradition and identity quietly collide.”
