ewelry created and worn during the Mughal era connoted much more than a simple act of adornment; it represented status, prestige, alliances, rites of passage and other significant milestones. It is perhaps one of the most easily recognizable aesthetics in fine jewelry and is continually, and justifiably, celebrated for its splendor and breathtaking scale. Founder of COUTURE jewelry brand, Moksh, Milan Chokshi, beautifully encapsulates the grandeur and elegance of Mughal jewelry in designs that embody a more contemporary and refined sensibility. By combining ancient craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technology, Moksh gracefully showcases intricacies and innovation in fabrication, exceptional combinations of colors and materials, and subtle complexities in detail and design, all with a nod to the Mughal and Islamic architecture that inspired its creation.

Milan’s family history in jewelry dates back to the 1920’s and the 1930’s, when his great grandfather and other members of his family were gem dealers in Rangoon and Burma. The family later entered the gold trade, a material that has traditionally been considered a prized possession for Indian families. In the 1960’s, Milan’s father began a diamond cutting and exporting business to Japan and the Far East, specializing in baguettes and Keshi pearls. The company eventually began creating bespoke jewelry for their clients, which prompted Milan to explore the development of a collection that would appeal to free-spirited women who like to express their individuality through their personal style. Given his family legacy, Milan undoubtedly possessed a wealth of knowledge about the precious materials used in his collection, however he bolstered his foundation of knowledge by taking courses in gemology before launching Moksh in 2005.

The name Moksh means a form of salvation or liberation and is rooted in Jainism, a religion older than Hinduism that promotes extreme non-violence; Moksh is, in the words of its founder, “what we all aspire for.” The signature aesthetic of Moksh jewelry is its meticulously constructed woven pearl pieces, as seen throughout several of the brand’s collections. The painstaking technique is accomplished with a needle and thread, a magnifying glass and a lot of patience. The awe-inspiring work of the craftspeople with whom Moksh works is buttressed with computer-aided technology, which precisely maps where the holes in the pearls should be. Weavers who are trained and qualified to take on this work are finite, which renders each piece utilizing this technique, regardless of its scale or level of drama, a collectable work of art.

Other pieces in the brand’s prolific portfolio of designs tout the same level of high-collectability. Sophisticated pearl strands are interwoven with precious gemstones and distinctive gold elements that evoke the grandiosity of Mughal-era architecture, sleek gold bangle bracelets are studded with baguette-cut emeralds, rubies or sapphires accented with brilliant white diamonds, and striking, immaculately constructed chandelier earrings conjure images of modern-day royalty. While their collections are full of show-stopping pieces of grand proportions, the brand is adept at creating the same astonishing effect in more modestly sized pieces, allowing their work to be seamlessly integrated into any jewelry aficionado’s existing jewelry wardrobe.
