Brand Spotlight: Stephen Wilson Studio

F
or conceptual artist, Stephen Wilson, the medium is the message. Melding computerized embroidery and drawing with 3D sculpture and laser cutting, the artist’s mix of mediums reflects his background in fashion and home design, as well as his personal experiences. His deep interest in the intersection of traditional craft and contemporary culture can be seen in his use of icons and iconography and his unique ability to shift the perception of archetypal images through his original lens.

His deep interest in the intersection of traditional craft and contemporary culture can be seen in his use of icons and iconography and his unique ability to shift the perception of archetypal images through his original lens.

Born and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey, and now working out of his studio in Charlotte, North Carolina, Stephen creates one-of-a-kind pieces of art using upcycled designer boxes, bags and packaging as a canvas. Using mixed-media techniques like embroidery, quilting and assemblage, he embellishes each completely unique and original piece with unexpected elements. His work can be seen as a commentary on materialism or contemporary culture, or it can simply be enjoyed for its ability to enhance what is already luxurious.

Stephen’s work is frequently exhibited alongside his neo-pop/urban art contemporaries such as Robert Mars, Mr. Brainwash and Punk Me Tender, as well major, contemporary pop artists such as Warhol, Hirst and Kapoor. Stephen is being welcomed to the COUTURE community as an inaugural “artist in residence.”

Long considering introducing an artist of a different medium to the event, when show management was introduced to Stephen’s work, they felt his juxtaposition of a high-fashion luxury sensibility with an avant-garde aesthetic was the perfect complement to the design ingenuity showcased by COUTURE’s fine jewelry artists and brands. A gallery of his work will be showcased in the Garden Lounge in the Cristal Ballroom and will be commercially available to both attendees and our exhibiting brands.
