Brand Spotlight: Suna Bros.

T
he Suna Bros legacy dates back to the 1920’s and its story is a rich illustration of the foundational tenets that continue to distinguish the brand today. In 1925, Kenneth Suna began an apprenticeship in a jewelry factory in Warsaw, Poland, where his brother, Joel, was already working. He quickly recognized he had a passion and inherent acumen for the craft and a unique ability to evaluate gemstones. Following his emigration to New York City in the 1930’s, Kenneth worked nights in a pocketbook factory while earning his high school diploma, before he eventually found work as an independent bench jeweler. Soon after, he established Suna, specializing in channel-set wedding bands. In 1940, Kenneth met Perle, his future wife, at her best friend’s wedding and proceeded to pursue her for 4 years. After joining the U.S. Army in 1942, Kenneth proposed to Perle on a crowded New York City subway and in 1944, she traveled by train to an army base in Florida where Kenneth was stationed, and they were married.

Today, Suna Bros is considered a heritage brand known for creating iconic, sophisticated pieces that transcend fleeting trends.

In 1945, just as Kenneth was about to set sail for the occupation of Japan, Aron, the couple’s first son, was born. His birth provided the necessary “points” required to keep Kenneth home, and he walked off the ship and went home to Brooklyn. After being discharged from the army, Kenneth and his brother Joel restarted the business, renaming the company Suna Bros. They set up shop in New York City’s diamond district, and soon after, their reputation for manufacturing diamond jewelry of the finest quality was firmly established and widely known. Over the next several decades, Suna Bros’ played an integral role in driving the direction of the fine jewelry industry as a whole, while simultaneously cementing its following of its robust private label business among all of the major Fifth Avenue jewelers.

Characteristically forward thinking, the brand installed a pneumatic tube system in their headquarters to transport work between non-adjacent office spaces before acquiring an entire floor of a NYC office building. Ever the trailblazer, in 1971 Kenneth went on a fortuitous trip to Tanzania to visit the country’s first diamond factory that employed a specially trained Tanzanian team. It was there that Kenneth connected with several key international players and forged long-lasting relationships that enhance the business to this day. While Joel and Kenneth eventually decided to amicably split, Joel stayed on board with the company as its primary diamond sorter, applying his extensive training and expert eye in the selection of the most impeccable diamonds.

After taking the GIA’s diamond course, Aron joined his father’s company and lived in Antwerp, Belgium for 3 months to further his education. He also polished diamonds in a factory outside of Antwerp, learned to sort full diamond cuts for make, color and clarity, and eventually began joining his father on international buying trips. After the untimely passing of Kenneth in 1975, Aron took over the reins and in 1978, his younger brother, Jonathan, joined the firm. Poised to carry on their father’s commitment to ethical, responsible and authentic business practices, the company went on to win awards and accolades for their exceptionally crafted designs while also contributing to the vitality of the industry as a whole.

Today, Suna Bros is considered a heritage brand known for creating iconic, sophisticated pieces that transcend fleeting trends. They utilize only the most exquisite, rare colored gemstones and the highest quality diamonds in their platinum and 18k gold collections. With manufacturing facilities housed in a workshop adjacent to their office in New York City, Aron and Jonathan are able to shepherd each piece through the fabrication process to ensure that it meets the exacting standards for which the Suna name is known. The highly skilled artisans and dedicated team with whom they work take great pride in safeguarding the family’s commitment to excellence, and the industry relationships that they’ve nurtured for decades continue to thrive in serving the brand in offering jewelry that will never go out of style.
