Brand Spotlight: Tabayer

T
he Tabayer collection of fine jewelry conveys the timeless and universal language of protection. Weaving into her designs influences of symbology and protective objects, from the ancient world to the present day, the brand’s founder, Nigora Tokhtabayeva, has a deep understanding of the power and intention that one can attach to a piece of jewelry. Born in Uzbekistan, Nigora spent her formative years in the United States, and her overall aesthetic is reminiscent of the American modernist sculptures whose work she discovered and became passionately drawn to as a teenager, including Jackie Winsor, Eva Hesse, Isamu Noguchi and Alexander Archipenko. The similarities in her work are evident in her bold use of negative space and her ability to capture the complexity in clean, simple lines and sensuous curves.

Underlying Nigora’s core philosophy is a belief instilled in her by her grandmother in jewelry’s ability to transcend ornamentation to become spiritually powerful objects. Her work is an exploration of ancient wisdom and metaphysical protection and embodies a spirit of guardianship rather than possession. She views the materials with which she works as a conduit between the interior and exterior worlds, highlighting their intrinsic power to protect as well as adorn.

Tabayer is making their COUTURE debut during our 2022 event with and expansion on the Orea collection. Currently composed of 45 pieces crafted in a monochromatic palette of yellow and white gold with white diamonds, the most recent additions to the collection include eight designs in rose gold paved with champagne to brown diamond ombré, with select pieces set with inverted brown diamonds.

The Mesopotamian goddess, Inanna, serves as the muse for the Orea collection. Succinctly known as the goddess of fertility, Inanna is a complex deity associated with multiple, documented genres, appearing in over 4,000 years of historical records. Her influence on Nigora’s current collection is consistent with the designer’s thoughtful, academic approach to design and the depth of understanding of human behavior she imbues into her work. Orea’s knotted shape, inspired by the coiled bundle of reeds representing fertility and protection in Inanna’s Knot, forms a graceful new talisman that sensually arcs until gradually acquiring a knife’s edge mid-point, resulting in asymmetric ends.

At the core of the Tabayer ethos is a deep commitment to protecting the earth and its inhabitants. “Protection is about principles,” reads a statement from the company. “If what you wear says something about who you are, then exploitation and environmental destruction are unacceptable.” All Tabayer pieces have been crafted from environmentally conscious and ethically sourced materials, including Fairmined gold from responsible artisanal and small-scale mining organizations that promote social development and environmental protection, and conflict-free, Kimberley-certified diamonds.
