Brand Spotlight: Talkative

T
alkative designer, Shinobu Marotta, had a career as a graphic designer before entering the world of fine jewelry. After embarking on developing skills in jewelry design and craftsmanship, she joined a leading jewelry company in her native Japan and spent several years working in the industry and studying the landscape of the market. Ultimately, Shinobu recognized that there was a niche between mass produced and overseas art jewelry that needed to be filled and in 2008, she launched Talkative in order to offer fine jewelry that could be worn casually and that would appeal to a more contemporary aesthetic.

Her designs are fun-loving and whimsical, and her design philosophy, which is largely influenced by her background in graphic design, is filled with light-hearted charm.

While she utilizes precious materials including 18k gold, diamonds and colored gemstones in the creation of her work, there is nothing finicky about her collections. Her designs are fun-loving and whimsical, and her design philosophy, which is largely influenced by her background in graphic design, is filled with light-hearted charm. Her jewelry is intended to spark a conversation, and her modern twist on traditional Japanese craftsmanship results in expressive jewelry that is intended for independent women who like to express themselves through style and adornment.

Subtle yet clever details are a defining feature of each collection within the Talkative portfolio. The brand’s exotic Crest collection is created with high-quality, natural stones carved to showcase the beauty of their natural patterns, thereby paying homage to the stones’ countries of origin. The Stick collection transforms vibrantly colored gemstones into linear pieces that seamlessly integrate into a gold framework. The brand’s Cube collection turns light into glitter in semi-three-dimensional cubes that create a prism effect. The Falling Drops collection showcases rings with the gemstone comfortably nestled at the base of two fingers and is inspired by the technique jewelry designers use when looking for loose gemstones, whereby they place the stone in consideration between two fingers to see its quality.

The fun and versatile point-of-view incorporated into each of the brand’s prolific collections belies the inherent sophistication of its craftsmanship. Shinobu partners with highly-skilled Japanese artisans in the fabrication of her jewelry, ensuring the permanence of each piece and its ability to become a beloved heirloom. The thoughtfulness and meticulous attention to detail applied throughout every touchpoint of the brand is remarkable, and Talkative’s jewelry is unique in its ability to beautifully showcase the intricacies involved in the manufacturing process.
