ANE Mexico was founded in 1942 by Sergio and Natalia Leites, art collectors who fled to Mexico from Paris during World War II. After settling into Mexico City’s Zona Rosa, they opened a leather products boutique known as a tannerie, from which the name “TANE” comes. In order to elevate their business, they began to work with local goldsmiths to create details for their bags and accessories, which was the inception of the company’s long relationship with Mexico’s silver. Quickly becoming famous for clean-lined designs and distinctive shapes, their work was inspired by its Mexican roots and the country’s traditions in ancient craftsmanship.
A percentage of the sales of the collection is paid to the cooperative as design royalties and it is the artisans who own the legal and intellectual authorship of all the pieces.

Today, TANE’s workmanship is widely recognized as unsurpassed, and each piece is handcrafted by the company’s talented artisans in their own workshops in Mexico. Their newest collection, BORDADOS by TANE, began with a process of searching and collaborative creation that lasted more than two years and that ultimately linked the brand to the Textile Museum of Oaxaca. The museum’s experience and proximity to the communities that create the most beautiful textiles of the state brought TANE closer to the community of San Antonio, Oaxaca, where master craftswomen embroiderers were willing to open the intimacy of their craft to the goldsmith’s house.

As part of TANE’s responsibility to build a more just world, the BORDADOS by TANE collection has been created under strict standards of transparency and legality, as well as practices based on respect for the cultural and social values of all involved. The embroiderers’ cooperative of San Antonino Castillo Velasco, Oaxaca, has given its formal consent to collaborate with TANE and reproduce its designs as part of the pieces in the collection. A percentage of the sales of the collection is paid to the cooperative as design royalties and it is the artisans who own the legal and intellectual authorship of all the pieces.

TANE works with a diverse group of designers who represent a wide-range of artistic influences and disciplines. The brand’s creative director, Ricardo Domingo, has a degree in jewelry design from the Massana School of Barcelona, and is the recipient of countless accolades and prestigious recognitions. He applies his expansive perspective and wealth of experience to the evolution of the brand, while ensuring continued adherence to its high ethical standards. Accepting this year’s award for Best in Silver in the COUTURE Design Awards, with a piece from the BORDADOS collection, Ricardo showcased his appreciation for the artisans with whom he works, “I accept this prize with a lot of pride and excitement on behalf of all of our master craftsmen and women back in Mexico City, and also on behalf of the Bordadoras, the embroidery craftswomen in Oaxaca who we work together with for this unique collection.”
