Brand Spotlight: Zoë Chicco

F
or designer Zoë Chicco, what started as a childhood fascination with her grandmother’s robust jewelry box has blossomed into a celebrated brand marking its 25th year in business. Always drawn to artistic pursuits, Zoë had the opportunity to take jewelry making classes in high school. Immediately hooked, she went on to study jewelry and metalsmithing at Skidmore College. Her infinite curiosity and passion for the medium drove her to learn as much as she could about the craft, including a semester abroad in Italy where she studied the most elemental components of the ancient artform, and apprenticeships under masters who helped her hone her expertise.

A genuine love and appreciation for those around her is infused in every piece Zoë creates.

Fleeing the cold winters of the Northeast, Zoë headed West for San Francisco, where she set up shop in a closet of her small apartment. Making everything herself, Zoë ran all aspects of the burgeoning business. While she eventually started adding support in other aspects of the business, she continued to spearhead production of her work, a fierce commitment to impeccable craftsmanship coupled with her ongoing love of the process making her loath to let go of those particular reigns.

After moving with her husband to Los Angeles, Zoë began growing the business in Downtown LA, discovering the best and brightest talent the city had to offer. Today, Zoë continues to lead the creative direction of the brand, yet she relies upon dozens of master craftspeople working in her in-house shop to produce pieces to her exacting standards, noting that while it may be her name on the door, the jewelry is a reflection of the talented team she has thoughtfully built to support all aspects of the business.

A genuine love and appreciation for those around her is infused in every piece Zoë creates. Taking women she admires and respects as her muse, she begins each design with a sort of archetype in mind, imagining the ways in which they’ll style her designs.

Reflecting on the moments and experiences in life that can best be commemorated or acknowledged with jewelry, her collections evolve to allow collectors of her work to express themselves through adornment, with pieces intended to be worn as a statement of individual style.

Starting with a sketch, each piece is made by hand in Zoë’s Downtown LA facility. She works alongside her husband, Tim, who interprets her sketches into CAD, before they then go into production, from fabrication to setting to polishing. Keeping the entire ecosystem under one roof seamlessly ensures the pieces can be worn with confidence and passed down for generations.

Working in 14k gold, to mark her Silver Anniversary, she has gone beyond her gold and diamond essentials with The Stone Age, bold color gemstone pieces that were inspired by a trip to the Tucson Gem Shows. Zoë is as passionate about jewelry today as she was when she first began piling on pieces from her grandmother’s jewelry box, and from the classic, feminine styles to chunkier, edgier looks, she continually creates timeless jewelry that feels both personal and chic.
