hile she had always been drawn to creative pursuits and was a self-described “kid that liked pretty, shiny things,” as an immigrant of Jamaican descent, Alexia Connellan felt compelled to follow a more traditional, “secure” professional trajectory. While attending Columbia University in New York City as a pre-law student, Alexia quickly realized that she found no joy in the prospect of being a lawyer, and she was advised to follow her heart and switch to something in the arts. Already a couple of years into earning her degree, Alexia redirected her focus to Art History and Visual Arts, and she managed to complete her degree in the years remaining in her 4-year college plan.
In the design and fabrication of fine jewelry, Alexia’s passions for gemstones, visual arts, sculpture and science could be channeled into pretty shiny things of her own making!
After graduating with her bachelor’s degree, she continued studying sculpture at the School of Visual Arts, while also earning a living as a commercial photographer and eventually a web designer. Throughout the years, Alexia continued to be drawn to gemstones and as a side hobby, researching and collecting gems that excited her.
It was in discovering that she had inherited a rare heart disease that Alexia found the resolve to throw all of her energies into a discipline that interested her on a multitude of levels. In the design and fabrication of fine jewelry, Alexia’s passions for gemstones, visual arts, sculpture and science could be channeled into pretty shiny things of her own making!
A significant amount of mining takes place in Jamaica, so Alexia has seen first-hand the destruction that can be left behind when mining isn’t done responsibly. Because of her personal experience, from the beginning of launching her collection, Alexia has been committed to maintaining ethical and sustainable practices in her business, and only aligning with companies who abide by those same high standards.
For her COUTURE debut, Alexia will be showcasing a range of pieces from her core collection, with motifs and ideas that are intrinsic to her style. All of her work shares the commonality of intention and thoughtfulness in every aspect of their design and fabrication; the gems incorporated into the work, their scale and proportion, their movement and their wearability.
Working in platinum and 18k gold, each of the gemstones with which she works have been hand-selected by Alexia, who applies her discerning eye and empirical knowledge in identifying exceptional quality tourmaline, emerald, spinel, pearls, moonstones, sapphires, garnets and rubies, most of which are untreated.
