Monica Rich Kosann’s Many Layers

D
esigner Monica Rich Kosann was a portrait photographer before embarking on her journey as a jewelry designer, and the commonality she discovered in both mediums was their ability to tell stories. As a photographer, Monica always portrayed her client’s stories through their moments and expressions rather than making them formally pose while she snapped a shot. Her lifelong love of antiques and flea markets is what ultimately sparked her recognition of jewelry’s unique ability to tell stories and continue legacies. As a photographer, she was immediately drawn to lockets, which hold memories of lives lived and milestone moments, and she continues to create sexy, contemporary variations on classic locket designs with the intention of empowering and inspiring the women who wear and collect her work.

“You can stare at all the large pieces for hours with a magnifier and find something special in every inch."

The newest addition to Monica’s prolific collection features agate and other uniquely patterned stones, such as Sodalite and Jasper. Monica has been painting a lot recently, and the practice has sharpened her instinct to dig even deeper and look more carefully into the layers and details that are incorporated into all art, including jewelry. Since visiting a stone supplier many years ago and becoming entranced with agates, she decided to highlight these intricately patterned stones into her jewelry design.

“All of the larger pieces of this stone were filled with thousands of layers exposing details inside the actual stone that just never stopped giving,” Monica explains. “You can stare at all the large pieces for hours with a magnifier and find something special in every inch. A swirl, a jagged edge, a stripe, a polka dot, a drip – layers and layers of multiple quartz minerals all waiting to be chosen. It became an adventure, a search for the prettiest piece, or most interesting. The fun is choosing the section and seeing it cut and polished to become this amazing gemstone, not one looking like the other. Maybe you will find some stones that speak to each other color wise, but each piece is in fact its own unit, making it a one-of-a-kind.”

Monica points out that Agate is known as a stone that is imbued with positive energy and is meant to bring stability, luck, positivity and focus to the wearer. Its ability to heal any angst or anxiety fosters positive mental energy and peace of mind, qualities inherent in all of Monica Rich Kosann’s jewelry.
