Podcast Review: Valerie Messika

I
n early October of this year, Messika, and the Parisian luxury brand’s founder, Valerie Messika, were all over the headlines of lifestyle and fashion articles and plastered across social media. The brand’s second collaboration with the perennially stylish Kate Moss, Messika by Kate Moss, culminated in a Paris Fashion Week launch party, replete with a high-wattage catwalk, that was attended by everyone from Cardi B to Anna Winter to Christian Louboutin. The jewelry is unequivocally fabulous and embodies the wearable-diamond ethos of the brand, even in more opulent designs like head pieces and Art Deco-inspired statement necklaces. The collection launch is a continuation of the relationship Valerie Messika forged with Kate Moss prior to their first collaborative collection, which launched in 2020. In an episode we recorded for the COUTURE Podcast at the start of this year, Valerie gave us insight into how that friendship came about and what it was like working with Kate (yes, we’re on a first-name basis now…). Below are 5 additional scoops we learned during that discussions.

Valerie was “obsessed” with Kate Moss before they met, and they initially bonded over a piece of Gallette des Rois at the Ritz in Paris.

  • Valerie’s father was (and still is) a prominent figure during in the diamond trade. Growing up with this strong influence allowed a young Valerie to develop an appreciation for diamonds, without, in her words, “sacralizing” the stones; the designer attributes this early exposure with her ability to design jewelry that appeals to a younger generation of style-conscious.
  • Valerie was “obsessed” with Kate Moss before they met, and they initially bonded over a piece of Gallette des Rois at the Ritz in Paris.
  • Valerie met her husband, who is five years her junior, when he was working for her father and she was married to somebody else. His persistence in pursuing her paid off; the couple has two daughters together and are partners in both life and business.
  • Valerie and her husband travel to work most days on his motorcycle which provides her with a feeling of freedom that inspires her creativity.
  • As much as the couple can, they mix in a holiday with the kids when traveling for work. Valerie told us that if she succeeds in having a beautiful brand, but she fails in raising her kids, it would be “a big problem for me when I make the summary of my life.”
