rtists of all mediums have taken inspiration from the natural world from time immemorial. The oldest known cave paintings date back 65,000 years and depict symbolic images of animals and natural surroundings that were quite possibly created by Neanderthals, indicating that the inherent tendency to re-create forms, colors and patterns from nature has been selected for success throughout human evolution. Jewelry designers specifically have long relied upon earth’s gifts to influence their artistry. Whether simply letting the natural beauty of gemstones dictate their designs, tapping into cultural movements, or expressing their love of a particular animal or element, designers of fine jewelry are perhaps more connected to the natural world than artists of any other medium.
