The Edit: Chokers, Collars and Torques (Oh My!)

O
f all of the examples of the clairvoyance of jewelry historian, Marion Fasel, her “All Choker-ed Up” Trend Report from November of 2023 is among the most prescient. Making the distinction between the chokers that were hitting the horizon of popularity at the time and a resurgence in riviera necklaces that had been having their own moment, she posited that chokers are the jewelry equivalent of a “clean slate,” that “reflect the signature style of the designers who create them, as much as the individuality of the people who wear them.”

Our April editorial features the traditional chokers that Marion highlighted back then, as well as some of the torques and collars that have become increasingly popular of late, all of them keeping the glow of adornment close to the face. Whether worn as the introduction of a layering story or donned on their own, these bold pieces bring the focus up top for statements that are both classic and cool.

From diamond collars like those by Oscar Heyman, Kwiat or Michael M to chunky links like the ones created by Rosario Navia or Robinson Pelham to sleek swaths of gold that remind us why we love the noble metal in the first place, like those crafted by IsabelleFa, Jacquie Aiche or Jade Trau, these looks provide a variety of means for self-expression.

Still others, like chokers by Karina Choudhrie or Sophia D, immediately evoke memories of the 1980’s, yet with intricate design elements and incorporation of exquisite materials that bring these elevated interpretations into the contemporary era. Short by design, each of these pieces go the extra mile in creating an effect, showcasing the attitudes, moods and mores of the individual who wears them.

The elegant simplicity that gives many of these pieces their inherent charm belies innovations in craftsmanship, with complex hinge technology, hidden clasps and extendable links representing advancements in the art form.
