The Edit–Red Carpet-Worthy Jewels

E
ach year, there is a season that is universally celebrated by those of us in the fine jewelry industry. It’s a season that has the ability to send shock waves throughout our collective world and often times influences its future. I’m writing, of course, about Awards Season. While of course we’re all rooting for Brendan Fraser to garner the acknowledgment his heartbreaking performance in The Whale deserves, or we’re preemptively cringing in anticipation of hearing Austin Butler’s seemingly permanent affectation when he accepts the Oscar for his role in Elvis, those are only secondary reasons for tuning in. Favorite movies, television shows or grammy award-winning performances aside, we all watch the various red carpets with bated breath to see what jewels the stars are going to wear.

It often seems as if there is some sort of collection consciousness at play among the various celebrity stylists who dictate the looks going down the red carpet. Some years it’s all about the necklace, other years, earrings are the star of the show and there’s ne’er a necklace to be seen. Whichever jewelry does make the cut has the ability to highlight for the masses of people tuning in some truly spectacular pieces, and even establish some long-lasting trends. Van Cleef & Arpels “Zip” necklace was first patented in 1938, but when Margot Robbie wore one to the 2015 Oscars, suddenly everyone was familiar with its storied history. In 1999, Gwenyth Paltrow’s styling of a platinum and 40ct diamond necklace from Harry Winston as a choker, set off a global craze for chokers. And of course, before Angelina Jolie’s right leg earned its own social media accounts, the 115ct Colombian emerald earrings designed by Lorraine Schwartz that the star wore to the Oscar’s in 2009 practically broke the internet.

During awards show red carpets, we love sitting back and simply observing (and quietly judging) while we wait for experts like Marion Fasel of The Adventurine to give us the biggest scoops. Yet in advance of the Oscars, in a nod to the most glamorous season of the year, we put out our own call for Red Carpet-Worthy jewelry and COUTURE’s talented designers and brands rose to the occasion. Here’s some jewelry tips for those aforementioned celebrity stylists from the designers and brands that create these celebrated looks–think big, bold, colorful earrings, collar necklaces, festive rings, bold bracelets, lots and lots of pearls and, it should go without saying, diamonds.
