Trend Report: Celestial Style

T
he moon and the stars, the cosmos and the constellations have been inspiring jewelry designers for eons. Going back over the last couple centuries, stars in jewelry were often linked to cultural events. And it’s not always what you might imagine. The joyous news of Marie Antoinette’s first eagerly awaited pregnancy in 1778 was met with a wave of jewelry designs featuring tiny gold stars on a blue enamel background.

Usually, however, jewelers are literally looking up for their ideas. The excitement surrounding Halley’s Comet passing by earth in 1835 and 1910 produced a full constellation of diamond-set star themed jewelry on both occasions. When American astronauts landed on the moon in 1969, many designers created moon themed jewels. None were perhaps more famous than the Apollo 11 Moon earrings Aristotle Onassis commissioned for Jackie Kennedy from COUTURE jeweler LALAoUNIS.

In between these events celestial style has remained more or less a constant. Today it is as popular as ever. Many COUTURE designers including Buddha Mamma, Robinson Pelham, Tara Hirschberg and Venyx are participating in the trend with dazzling creations. All of them draw on personal and unique sources of inspiration to come up with their heavenly work. Find out all about it below.

It is quite possible these stars could turn up on some luminaries.

Robinson Pelham Vega Collection

British jewelry brand Robinson Pelham—who is perhaps best known in America as the jeweler behind the diamond acorn earrings Kate Middleton wore on her wedding day—will make you wish upon their star collection.

Named Vega, after the brightest star in the northern constellation of Lyra, one classic five-point star is the center of the necklace, earrings and ring in the capsule collection. Each are cleverly put together with kite shape diamonds. The assemblage of stones adds scale to the designs and keeps the prices within reason compared to what they would cost if the jewels were composed of one-star shaped diamond. Each diamond star is surrounded by a bezel of white or yellow gold. Another layer of diamonds adds more twinkle to the stars.

It is quite possible these stars could turn up on some luminaries. They would look amazing on Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge or Gwyneth Paltrow who is also a fan of the brand and frequently wears their gold and diamond Identity Necklace.

Venyx Astraea Collection

It’s undeniable that some opals look like the cosmos. Venyx designer, Eugenie Niarchos played up the appearance of the solar system in opals in two necklaces in her new collection named Astraea after the daughter of Astraeus and Eos and the mythological ancient Greek star maiden.

The necklaces center on emerald cut opals mounted in an east-west direction within a frame of round and baguette cut diamonds. Gold stars highlight the surface of the stones. A blue opal is the centerpiece of the Galaxy necklace. And a red opal shines in the middle of the Milky Way design. The names of the jewels are cleverly worked into the gold galleries on the backs of the pieces.

Several earrings in the collection sparkle with star motifs. One special pair have an opal in the pendant and a star on top twinkling with diamonds set in black rhodium that conjures up the night sky.

Tara Hirshberg Constellation Collection

Los Angeles based jewelry designer Tara Hirshberg came up with the idea for her Constellation collection of diamond and gold earrings and pendants when she was literally star gazing on a family vacation in Japan at the Teshima Art Museum.

“The museum is a stunning contemplative space with elliptical openings in the ceiling where you lie on the floor and watch the clouds go by,” remembered Tara. “I was in there when I started to consider the zodiac. Symbols that are unique and have ancient meanings. They are personal and universal.”

The gestures in the jewels started evolving in Tara’s mind when she saw Japanese brush art on the same trip. “The brushwork reminded me of how a star sign looks when you see it in a linear form,” explained Tara. “I started thinking about stars just hanging in the sky and how the constellation would do the same hanging off your ear.”

Tara expanded the jewels in the collection beyond the initial group of 12 large diamond and gold single earrings to include smaller gold earrings and pendants. The linear jewels are a modern take on the age old signs of the zodiac. Kate Hudson proved this point to perfection when she sported an Ares earring from the collection shortly after the line launched.

Buddha Mamma

“The stars and moon are absolutely magical to me and they were to my mother too.” says Nancy Badia who designs the Buddha Mamma collection with her daughter Dakota. “My mother’s influence, Dakota’s grandmother, is evidenced in every celestial piece we create.”

And the pieces they create fit right in with the bohemian eclectic good vibes of the entire collection. There is one huge enamel and gem-set star pendant and little stars on gold and enamel huggies. Necklaces shine with lucky star pendants of colorful gems. Little diamond rings capture the magic of shooting stars with moons and stars cut out on the interior gallery of the band.

When asked what inspired the collection Nancy explains, “The past few years have been especially hard on the whole world, and so we wanted to create something a little bit ‘out of this world’ and encourage everyone to look up.”
