.P. de Silva Jeweller’s heritage dates back to 1872, when its founder, Balage Parolis de Silva, set sail from Ceylon, traveled across the world and ultimately established his first atelier on Singapore’s High Street. Among the first luxury brands in the country, de Silva soon enjoyed royal patronage, designing bespoke pieces for the Duke of Connaught, and His Majesty the King of Siam. His reputation for creating exquisite jewelry extended beyond royalty, and the brand’s timeless and elegant heirlooms were as coveted to wear as they were to pass down for generations.
Vestiges of the past can be seen in all touchpoints of the brand.
Shanya Amarasuriya is the fifth generation to join the family business. Her colorful childhood was filled with fond memories of visiting the family boutique and workshop with her father, marveling as she witnessed the transformation of two dimensional sketches into three dimensional works of art.
While she did not always intend to join the family business, she had always harbored a desire, fueled by these visits, to create, and she knew her father would be delighted for her to follow in his footsteps. She also realized that the company’s ethos are aligned with her values and worldview, which allows her to lean into the sense of intimacy and poetry inherent in fine jewelry design and fabrication.
Vestiges of the past can be seen in all touchpoints of the brand. From original designs to traditional use of materials and techniques to the pace at which relationships are formed. Just as the jewelry is painstakingly designed and manufactured, with each stone and element thoughtfully selected, so are the decisions made about the direction of the brand and meaningful connections with clients created, with frequent letter writing a core tenet of the family-owned business.
The brand’s access to extraordinary colored gemstones is also central to its identity, maintaining the founder’s intention to democratize knowledge and information surrounding these gifts of nature.
While the brand’s history is continually honored, Shanya’s influence has infused the work with a contemporary flair. As Creative Director, Shanya creates pieces that are in-keeping with the brand’s aesthetic and philosophical DNA, while also appealing to a modern, East-meets-West style sensibility.
Long considered one of Singapore’s “best kept secrets,” Shanya is uniquely positioned to launch B.P. de Silva on a global stage. With a strong foundation as a revered luxury design house, the new generation of B.P. de Silva showcases a sense of bold confidence, while also safeguarding the core values that the brand has embodied for over 150 years.
