ong before launching Vice Versa, Hannah Traulsen and Sophie Thoerner had already developed a close bond. Working together in the industry, they immediately hit it off and a friendship quickly formed. They realized that they had a mutual reverence for jewelry as an artform, and they admired one another’s distinct skills and expertise in its development. Discovering that they worked well together, Sophie, who is Creative Director and designs for the brand and Hannah, who is adept at sourcing and production, knew that they had a point-of-view and a way of bringing it to life that was unique. In August of 2020, with a combined 20 years working in all facets of the jewelry industry, they struck out on their own to establish Vice Versa.
The name of the brand is derived from their most iconic designs and the first in their collection, their distinctive Versa ring.

Growing up, Sophie had always been artistically inclined, yet while attending school at Savannah College of Arts, she initially felt untethered, unsure of what medium may be her true calling. She was interested in architecture and considered following in her father’s footsteps and studying the field, but it never truly captured her attention. After taking an introductory jewelry class, she was instantly besotted.

Given an immersive experience at the bench and fabricating every element of her designs by hand, Sophie started to view the process as creating tiny pieces of architecture. The devotion to balance and precision inherent in that framework is evident in the brand’s ever expanding and evolving body of work, with transformative pieces designed to be seamlessly integrated into a wearer’s life.

Hannah never imagined she’d enter the jewelry industry; she had an uncle in the trade who discouraged that endeavor. Yet while studying at Barnard, she unexpectedly had the opportunity to take an internship at a costume jewelry company. Tasked with sourcing materials for collections, she was quickly enamored by the tactile process of bringing an idea to physical form.

She ended up cutting her teeth in costume jewelry for two years before moving on to fine jewelry. With a focus on sourcing and managing production for Vice Versa, she is perpetually mindful of the impact of mining, both environmentally and culturally. She applies a lens of creativity and responsibility to her analytical eye, resulting in the brand utilizing only the highest quality, ethically sourced materials.

The name of the brand is derived from their most iconic designs and the first in their collection, their distinctive Versa ring. With the modular functionality for which many of their pieces are known and celebrated, Versa is designed like a puzzle, with the intricacies of the design allowing the component parts to fit together in perfect unison.

The piece, which is crafted in 14k gold, with or without diamonds, can also be worn ad hoc as a means of self-expression, an intention that has become an overarching tenet of the brand. While conceptualizing designs or iterations in scale or scope, the two are acutely aware of how personally and intimately people connect with jewelry. They strive for their work to become part of the narrative of an individual’s life and for generations to follow, for their jewelry to be worn and for the wear of every day to add to the beauty of a piece over time.
