Breaking Bread with Reinhold

E
very year, we wait (im)patiently to get our hands on a copy of Reinhold’s famous holiday book. Of course, we love seeing the jewelry on the glossy pages, especially since many of the pieces reveal the most current collection launches from some of our favorite brands. But we also look forward to taking a deep dive into one of many national features that instill in Puerto Ricans that characteristic Boricua pride.

The commentary from the included designers also showcases the ways in which the creative approaches of designers and chefs are aligned.

Reinhold’s 2022 book featuring the island’s coffee growers not only had us hankering for a cup of their internationally celebrated java, it also warmed our hearts to see the resilience and ingenuity of an industry that was almost completely decimated by Hurricane Maria. In last year’s “La Moda of Puerto Rico,” the work of 26 of Puerto Rico’s most revered fashion designers practically jumped off the pages, their exquisite design details establishing an elegant framework through which we could admire the complementing jewelry.

I find it difficult to believe I’m even saying this, but this year’s Holiday Book set the bar even higher. “The Chefs of Puerto Rico” not only brings to life some of the most mouth-watering culinary fetes ever compiled in one place, it also sheds a light on the commonality between these world class chefs and truly talented fine jewelry artists. Using the same “ingredients,” they come up with singular creations that are greater than the sum of their component parts.

The commentary from the included designers also showcases the ways in which the creative approaches of designers and chefs are aligned. Rather than focusing simply on the function—making an accessory or satiating hunger—they both take a holistic approach to satisfying multiple senses. They also understand that the ultimate purpose of their creations extends beyond a moment in time. The memories of a beautiful meal shared with loved ones can bring joy for a lifetime, just as a truly exquisite piece of jewelry has the power to transcend mere adornment.

“Being a chef in Puerto Rico is more than just a profession—it’s a calling,” Yael Reinhold writes in the book’s introduction. “It’s about embracing a community overflowing with laughter, joy, and a warmth that’s as unique as the island itself. Here, food is more than sustenance; it’s a celebration, a story, and a testament to the unbreakable bonds that tie us together like family.”
