Studio Visits with Will Kahn: Oscar Heyman

I
walked through midtown New York City to 501 Madison Ave, passing Saks Fifth Avenue and St Patrick’s Cathedral on the way. The 1929 Art Deco set-back skyscraper is quintessential New York. Just like its longest running tenant: jeweler Oscar Heyman.

It’s no wonder the company used to produce for that same rarified group of jewelers, Van Cleef and Cartier amongst them.

The workshop and office spans 2 floors and upon entering, it feels a bit like you are back in time. The rustic workshop houses original machinery and benches used today just as they have for around a century.  What also hasn’t changed?  The quality of the pieces being made there.

Tom Heyman, pulls out trays to show me the latest creations.   Diamond, ruby and sapphire bracelets, a rainbow of cocktail rings in rare stones and a necklace of perfectly matched tourmaline hearts – all of which could easily rival those made in Place Vendome. It’s no wonder the company used to produce for that same rarified group of jewelers, Van Cleef and Cartier amongst them.

Tom is in the second generation to run the business. The first began with Oscar and Nathan, who apprenticed with Faberge. Then came to NYC and worked with Pierre Cartier, before going on their own in 1912.  It turns out, what I found behind the doors of this workshop was not just world-class jewelry, but a success story of an immigrant family making it in the big city.
