Studio Visits with Will Kahn: Ten Thousand Things

T
he bright white West Village store of Ron Anderson and David Rees’s brand, Ten Thousand Things, was abuzz just before Christmas. Earrings of Chrysoprase and Pink Quartz hung like ornaments being plucked as gifts before the holiday. David said they were cleaned out of many of the stand-out pieces, but I still found much to admire. The earrings especially, small and large, organic drops of carved stones from India, easy and romantic, sculpted perfectly to drop from a woman’s ear in a way that flatters.

This yin and yang duality seems fitting for the brand; there's a wild natural element to their pieces while still maintaining an elegant clean modernism.

Their clients love them, celebrities amongst them like Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon. Sarandon adorns the wall shot by famed-fashion-photographer-duo Inez and Vinoodh, (also fans of the brand) leading to the workshop.

The minimal shop floor contrasts like night and day with the wild creative space in the back. I find Ron polishing Lapis hoops on a chaotic workbench, tools and stones and metal pieces scattered about. This yin and yang duality seems fitting for the brand; there’s a wild natural element to their pieces while still maintaining an elegant clean modernism.
