Brand Spotlight: Assael

Pearls have figured prominently throughout history, with mentions of pearls’ rarity and exquisiteness appearing in ancient texts, and this gem of the sea playing a starring role in countless folklores and legends. From Jackie O to Lady Diana to Elizabeth Taylor to Rihanna, pearls continually influence fashion movements, and their diversity is celebrated in the broad spectrum of styles showcased on runways, red carpets, and on well-heeled women from across the globe. Since the 1920’s, the House of Assael has been synonymous with the procurement of the most magnificent pearls in the world, and it has long been established as an indomitable authority of these coveted gems.

Assael was founded in Italy by James Assael, and soon his son, Salvador, after serving with distinction in the U.S. Army, went on to join his father’s firm and learn the trade. Known for his adventurous spirit and his keen eye for exceptional beauty, Salvador soon became enamored with pearls, and he began traveling throughout South East Asia and Australia in search of the most magnificent specimens. After first seeing a deep, dark Tahitian pearl, and painstakingly and patiently cultivating a sublime strand of these exotic gems, Salvador challenged his friend Harry Winston to sell the first Tahitian pearl strand in America. Soon, Salvador was credited as the legendary inspiration behind the Tahitian black pearl industry, and he was given commendation for establishing a new export industry for French Polynesia.

Upon his passing, Salvador handed over the reins of the family legacy to his wife, Christina Lang Assael, which she acknowledges as “an incredible gift and a huge responsibility.” Lauded as the “King of Pearls,” Salvador’s persistence, resoluteness and relentless quest for perfection continue to serve as the brand’s tenets, and Mrs. Assael is steadfast in her commitment to creating jewelry of transcendent beauty and impeccable craftsmanship.

Having had the opportunity to travel the world and learn from him, Mrs. Assael embodies her husband’s contagious passion for pearls, and under her creative leadership, the firm has expanded its appeal to a broader audience of jewelry collectors and pearl enthusiasts. An elegant strand of classic, Akoya or South Sea pearls is always a powerful statement of confidence and grace, and the firm excels in producing these jewelry archetypes. They also design jewelry with contemporary, avant-gard silhouettes and daring color combinations, highlighting pearls’ ability to serve as a sophisticated statement of individuality.
