Brand Spotlight: Melissa Kaye

W
hile she’s loved jewelry design from a young age, even going so far as to set up a jewelers bench in her room when she was growing up, Melissa Kaye’s path towards jewelry design as a career was circuitous. She studied computer science and engineering at MIT before earning her master’s in computational finance from Carnegie Mellon University. From there, she embarked on a career as a quantitative strategist at Goldman Sachs, where she thrived in the field for a decade.

For those versed in the craft, superior jewelry design is often equated with problem solving.

It was while taking on an interior design project of her apartment that Melissa’s latent creativity was reignited. She felt so fulfilled in expressing this side of herself that she decided to take a leap and explore her lifelong passion for jewelry design.

She initially dabbled with a few classes at FIT before deciding to commit to the full, 2-year design program where she developed her skillset and acumen and, in 2013, she launched her eponymous collection.

For those versed in the craft, superior jewelry design is often equated with problem solving. Melissa notes that her analytical and resourceful mind has lent itself well to what she does now, allowing her to draw on the skills she developed in her previous career to, in her words, “strategically break down problems into smaller, more manageable pieces.”

This is not only valuable in terms of running a successful business, but also in creating the clean, precise silhouettes for which the brand is now known. She is not only focused on the aesthetic beauty of the pieces she makes, but also their function, resulting in work that is both wearable for every day and sophisticated.

Beyond the inherent structural integrity of her work, vestiges of her former career are seen throughout Melissa’s approach to design. The balance and symmetry in her work occur as direct reflections of an analytical mind, while the neon pops of color in her enamel collections are reminiscent of highlighters utilized in a pre-computer corporate America. A lifelong New Yorker, architectural influences are also evident throughout her collections, and all of work embodies a cool, metropolitan sensibility with an edge of refined ease.

Melissa’s work is fabricated exclusively in New York City by a team of skilled artisans and, ever attentive to details, the designer personally oversees every aspect of the production process. She is continually mindful of her clients when creating her work and she is uncompromising in her commitment to impeccable craftsmanship and quality materials, always striving to exceed the exacting standards and refined tastes of a luxury jewelry collector.
