Brand Spotlight: Sara Katherine Jacobson

B
orn in New York City, now based in London, Sara Katherine Jacobson takes a holistic approach to jewelry design. With a background in sculpting, she was originally drawn to large-scale artworks before becoming fascinated with the immediacy and physicality of working with metal.

In all of her work, the body serves as the nucleus, the human form becoming an integral element of her designs.

Though jewelry was initially just a byproduct of her explorations as a sculpture, while living and working at Gem Palace in Jaipur, Sara became immersed in jewelry’s ability to establish an intimate bond between body and object. Enamored with the unique ways in which the artform can convey historical narratives and contemporary mores, the medium became central to her creative expression.

In all of her work, the body serves as the nucleus, the human form becoming an integral element of her designs. Sara establishes a sensory experience of sight, sound and touch that encourages interaction with the work and is an invitation to handle rather than simply wear the jewelry.

Stones rattle around in cages like a game, rings turn with pressure points against the finger, metal presses against the skin, and open work allows the skin to become part of the palette.  Many of her designs are intentionally created to be inward facing, honoring one’s relationship with oneself.

Sara has long been charmed by the Victorian language of symbolism, where gems and precious metals carried hidden meanings. She wants her work to feel both personal and universally relatable, to offer a sense of comfort, protection and home and to be reached for like one reaches out to a good friend.

She explains, “I’m most inspired by the relationship between emotion, memory, and touch, and how fine jewelry can create a visual identity for these invisible experiences. Through the movement of vibrant gems, their subtle sound, and contemporary form, each piece becomes a multi-sensory story expressed in stone and metal.”

Working with precious metals and gemstones in combination with more unconventional materials, Sara collaborates with multi-generational jewelers in New York City to bring her vision into tactile form. With an MA in Jewellery & Metal from London’s Royal College of Art, her profound understanding of the materials with which she works allows her the ability to buck conventional conceptions of how jewelry should be worn. Ranging in scale from subtle to intrepid, her work is boldly rebellious, while also showcasing a permanence and familiarity that instils in the wearer a sense of confidence and giddy contentment.
