Brand Spotlight: Sylva & Cie.

T
he designer behind Sylva & Cie., Sylva Yepremian, was born in Lebanon and raised in Paris. Hailing from a lineage of jewelry craftsmen, Sylva’s father was a Master Craftsman who created jewelry for important Parisian maisons before the family moved to Los Angeles when Sylva was 16 years old to run the family jewelry business. Endlessly inspired by her father, Sylva spent time working at the bench from a young age, yet she went on to pursue studies in language and, perennially stylish, she flirted with the idea of becoming a fashion designer. After meeting her husband, Raffi, the two were pulled back to Sylva’s heritage, and launched Sylva & Cie. in 2007.

Using a vocabulary of precious metals and gemstones and a lexicon of jewelry history, Sylva pays homage to the past while embracing a bold, contemporary aesthetic.

Throughout her prolific collections, Sylva continues to showcase her love for language. Using a vocabulary of precious metals and gemstones and a lexicon of jewelry history, Sylva pays homage to the past while embracing a bold, contemporary aesthetic. The asymmetry in her work is the result of the organic evolution of her creativity. She displays a daring approach to the design process and establishes a consistent and distinctive narrative that displays her inherent belief in the transcendental power of jewelry. Beyond mere adornment, she seeks for her designs to be a means for individual self-expression, allowing collectors to convey the complexities of lived experience through her work.

For Sylva, each piece begins with a sketch before being brought to life in her Los Angeles atelier, with Sylva personally overseeing every aspect of the hand-crafted, fabrication process, from design to gemstone selection to layout. Each hand-selected stone is carefully arranged, often in unexpected patterns that defy conventional norms.

Charmed by rare and unique materials, she delights in enhancing the inherent beauty of vintage pieces and one-of-a-kind stones in fresh, modern designs. With the end wearer acting as muse, she creates through her work a discourse between past and present, perpetually contemplating the possibilities of the role her jewelry may play in the ongoing story of someone’s life.

One of Sylva’s most recent collections, C’est Beau C’est Cher, deftly communicates the designer’s irreverent side. Translating to “It’s beautiful. It’s expensive,” a phrase she posits is typically whispered under one’s breath, she has transformed the quip into a source of empowerment. Rendered in 18k gold and black diamonds, the collection is limited to 300 numbered and signed bracelets and is the perfect complement to a collection of pieces that can only be considered core essentials for anyone who adores the fine jewelry.
